BCI will investigate shooting by Trumbull deputy

MECCA — The state will investigate the shooting of a Mecca man by a Trumbull County Sheriff’s deputy, said Sheriff Thomas Altiere.

Altiere said today the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation will investigate a burglary that led to the shooting and whether the shooting was proper.

Altiere said he also will investigate the shooting.

Altiere said Deputy Anthony Diehl shot the 48-year-old man after the man fired on him. The man was taken by helicopter to Cleveland University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Altiere would not release the man’s name, saying his next of kin has not been officially notified.

The shooting happened after a burglary was reported at the Hoagland-Blackstub Road home by a neighbor, Altiere said.
