YOUNGSTOWN — A federal grand jury in Cleveland has returned a two-count indictment that charges Derrell A. Nelson and Craig Womack Jr. with using guns to rob banks in Campbell and North Lima. Nelson and Womack are accused of taking $14,750 from the First National Bank, 355 Robinson Road, Campbell on Sept. 7 and taking $8,560 from Huntington Bank, 11623 Market St., North Lima on Oct. 19. The indictment was filed Thursday in U.S. District Court.
Woman is ‘critical’
SHARON, Pa. — A Sharpsville woman was in critical condition at St. Elizabeth Health Center late Thursday night after a head-on crash with a tractor-trailer on Interstate 80 in Mercer County. Pennsylvania State Police said Maureen J. Maykowski, 45, was traveling in the wrong direction on westbound lanes of the interstate when the crash occurred at 1:36 a.m. Monday . Police said the tractor-trailer, driven by William Jenkins, 42, of Youngsville, Pa., drove over the top of Maykowski’s 1998 Chevrolet Cavalier. Police said she had to be extricated from the car by Shenango Township Volunteer Firefighters. Jenkins suffered minor injuries, police said.
Boy charged, suspended
POLAND — A Poland Seminary High School sophomore is charged with disorderly conduct after a teacher overheard a comment he made, Poland Township police reported. Police were called at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday after the teacher reported the comment to the assistant principal, police said. The 15-year-old boy made a comment that referred to killing people at the school, police and Superintendent Robert Zorn said. Zorn said the boy was suspended for 10 days. He is also to get counseling, and Zorn said the district would like confirmation from a psychologist that he isn’t a danger to himself or others.
1 killed, 5 hurt in crash
NEW SPRINGFIELD — Five people were hospitalized and one man was killed in a collision on state Route 165 on Wednesday. Justin P. Gillis, 26, of East Palestine, was pronounced dead at the scene. He was driving a Pontiac Vibe that collided with a Dodge Durango carrying four passengers about 8:30 p.m. just east of state Route 617. All five occupants of the truck were taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center with nonlife-threatening injuries, according to officials from the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
2 file for re-election
LISBON — Two veteran Republican Columbiana County officials filed Thursday to run for re-election next year. County Engineer Bert Dawson was elected in 1969 and is the senior county engineer in Ohio. He’s the secretary and a member of the State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers. County Commissioner Jim Hoppel, a former teacher and coach, will run for a fourth term. Hoppel, who owns River Valley Realty, is chairman of the commissioners.
Free plane rides for kids
NEW CASTLE, Pa. — Free airplane rides for youngsters ages 8 through 17 will be offered at the New Castle Municipal Airport from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday, weather permitting. The flights are offered by pilot Jack Thompson of Grove City through the Experimental Aviation Association’s Young Eagles program. The program is designed to introduce youngsters to flying. Thompson is hoping to reach his goal of flying 1,000 youngsters through the program by early next year. So far, he has flown 954 children. Call (724) 652-5546 for information.
