Sheriff files to run

LISBON — Columbiana County Sheriff David Smith has filed to seek another term as he awaits his own trial. Smith, a Republican, filed his petition Tuesday at the county board of elections. The sheriff is awaiting trial in Cambridge Municipal Court on a charge of operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. The jury trial has been rescheduled to 9 a.m. Feb. 21. Smith was charged after he was stopped by the Ohio State Highway Patrol in Guernsey County late Oct. 11. He was reportedly speeding and swerving in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 70. He was driving his unmarked county cruiser. The court placed Smith under an administrative license suspension, but he has been granted driving privileges for work-related activities. Smith cannot run for the post if he is convicted of the first-degree misdemeanor.

Columbiana Co. levy

LISBON — The Columbiana County Board of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities next year will seek a new levy voters rejected in November. William Devon, the board’s superintendent, on Wednesday asked the county commissioners to place the 2.5-mill levy for 10 years starting in 2008 on the ballot. It would bring in about $3.5 million a year. The commissioners approved the levy bid. The mental retardation board has been collecting four levies, and increased collections under one in the May primary. Devon has said the board is facing having to close its Robert Bycroft School, which he said is not mandated by law. That could place the care of clients with local school districts.
