But nevertheless, those mavericks at the First Annual Penn-Ohio Ugly Christmas Sweater Cornhole and Rock & Roll Extravaganza persist. The first-time event, which will raise money and toys for Toys for Tots, begins at 8 p.m. at Yankee Lake Ballroom. Once upon a time, Cedar’s Lounge in downtown Youngstown was the epicenter of a punk rock movement that still colors the local music scene. Actually it was the early ’80s, with bands like 8 Balls, Illuminatus and Bangorillas. Those three acts and about a dozen more from the era will reunite this weekend Old Fashioned Punk Rock X Mas — two nights that will recapture those glorious days. Attention line dance fans: the Holiday Line Dance and Hair Show party will run from 7 to 11 p.m. Dec. 28 at B&O Station, 530 Mahoning Ave., Youngstown. Dr. Greg, of the Total Package Band, will DJ the event, which will include his new line-dance creation, “The Simon Says Shuffle.”

Proving that rock ’n’ roll never takes a holiday, The Zou will headline a show at Cedar’s Lounge on Christmas night. Frequent Season — which includes members of Mystic Wip Hustler — and Third Class are also on the bill.

A touring production of the Broadway rock musical “Rent” comes to Powers Auditorium at 8 p.m. March 18. Tickets are now on sale at the Powers box office or by calling (330) 744-0264. The Tony Award-winning production was one of the first Broadway musicals to feature lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender characters. It’s about a group of struggling artists in New York who are living under the shadow of AIDS.
