MEN

No. 14 Texas A&M 64, Ark.-Pine Bluff 37

COLLEGE STATION, Texas — It didn’t matter Sunday, but the Texas A&M Aggies know they’ll have to develop more of a killer instinct to win once Big 12 play begins next month. Josh Carter scored 16 points andTexas A&M (9-1) used stifling defense to win. The Aggies held Arkansas-Pine Bluff scoreless for nearly 10 minutes to start the game, then the Golden Lions went without a basket for an 8 1/2-minute span in the second half. Coach Mark Turgeon and his players were upset they allowed the Golden Lions to get back in it after they jumped to an 18-0 lead. “We don’t have that killer instinct yet,” Turgeon said. “We’ve done it a lot. This time Arkansas-Pine Bluff wasn’t good enough to come back. It was disappointing. We’ve worked really hard to try and get better at that.” The win improves the Aggies’ home record to 7-0 and breaks a three-game winning streak for Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

No. 21 Arizona 69, Fresno St 50

Facing Fresno State in an early afternoon game, the Wildcats again started slowly, trailing 17-15 midway through the first half. But Arizona responded with a 20-2 run to take a 35-19 halftime lead. Bayless fueled the spurt with three 3-pointers and a jam off an alley-oop pass from Nic Wise. On the defensive end, Arizona limited Fresno State to 29.2 percent shooting in the first half. The Bulldogs had more turnovers (nine) than field goals (seven) and scored only two baskets in the final 11:39 of the first half. The Wildcats put together a 10-5 surge after halftime to end any possibility of a Bulldogs rally. Kevin Bell scored 12 points and Hector Hernandez had 11 for the Bulldogs (5-5), who dropped their second straight and fell to 1-4 on the road.
