Coaching family: His father, Ron, was Don Bucci’s defensive coordinator at Mooney. His brother, Ron Jr., is Mooney’s defensive coordinator. Another brother, Bob, is head coach at Oklahoma University. Another brother, Mark, is Arizona’s defensive coordinator.

Other views: “Mike was an outstanding all-around athlete who had more of a temper than either Bobby or Mark. He, too, is a student of the game and someone who demands perfection. You can still see him get excited when he roams the sidelines of his Arizona games.” — Don Bucci, former Mooney football coach.

“Of all the Stoops brothers, Mike was the biggest challenge because he was such a live wire. He would joke more than his brothers, but on the field he was all work and business. That quality has carried over to his team today as the head coach at the University of Arizona.” — Roy Nard, former Mooney basketball coach.
