Event needs volunteers

YOUNGSTOWN — First Night Youngstown is seeking volunteers for its family-friendly, alcohol-free, New Year’s Eve celebration.

The event will be held in downtown Youngstown and on parts of Youngstown State University’s campus from 5 p.m. to midnight. Volunteers will be asked to work one three-hour shift.

Both new and returning volunteers are also required to attend a brief orientation at 6 p.m. Monday on the first floor of the City Centre One building, 100 East Federal St.

Mercer Co. toy drive

MERCER, Pa. — A toy drive for needy children has been extended through Friday. The drive is sponsored by the Mercer County Children’s Aid Society, and toys are being collected at the Pennsylvania State Police barracks on Pa. Route 62.

Only new, unwrapped toys are being accepted. The Abate Biker Club was expected to make a large monetary and toy donation to the annual drive at a presentation today at the barracks.

Rolling Cash 5 winner

HUBBARD — Anthony J. Nemes of Hubbard won a $100,000 top prize in the Dec. 4 Rolling Cash 5 drawing, the Ohio Lottery Commission announced.

After mandatory federal and state taxes totaling 31 percent, Nemes will receive a check for $69,000. The Dec. 4 Rolling Cash 5 winning numbers were 4-7-11-25-31. Nemes picked the numbers, purchasing the winning ticket from Giant Eagle.

Health clinic gets grant

YOUNGSTOWN — Thrivent Financial for Lutherans will present a grant of $5,000 to the Midlothian Free Health Clinic at noon Sunday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 388 E. Midlothian Blvd.

The health clinic is a nonprofit facility offering free nonemergency health care to residents living along the Midlothian corridor. The service area includes South Side Youngstown communities and Struthers.

The grant will help in start-up costs for the clinic, scheduled to begin serving clients in the first quarter of 2008. Services will be provided at Bethlehem church.

Attacker cuts man

WARREN — A 41-year-old Southern Boulevard man was cut in the left ear with a knife when he confronted a man outside his home at 8 p.m. Sunday.

After the two struggled for a couple of minutes, the attacker fled on foot through the woods. The victim was taken to St. Joseph Health Center for treatment.

Robbery reported

WARREN — A 55-year-old woman reported that a man robbed her at knife point in the parking lot of the CVS Pharmacy, 620 E. Market St., about 4:50 p.m. Friday.

Firefighter injured

WARREN — One firefighter received a back injury putting out a fire at an unoccupied house at 255 York Ave. N.W. that did $20,000 damage.

The injured firefighter is Brad Brewster. The extent of his injuries was not known.

The Sunday morning fire started on the second floor of the three-story home and extended to the first floor. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
