Consumer Reports tips
An estimated 37 million toys were recalled this year because of unsafe levels of lead and other health hazards.
Do not buy metal jewelry, especially cheap metal jewelry, for young children.
Be careful of toys with magnets, which can cause serious health problems if swallowed.
Avoid no-name products and be careful of toys purchased at dollar stores, street fairs, vending machines, thrift stores or yard sales.
Avoid permanent paints and markers when purchasing craft materials.
Beware of toys that can be broken into smaller pieces.
