The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941, drew the United States into World War II. Here are some other facts about the attack:

The damage done to U.S. Naval and Army forces at Pearl Harbor was devastating. The Navy and Marine Corps suffered 2,896 casualties, of which 2,117 were deaths. The Army lost 228 killed or died of wounds, and had 113 seriously wounded. At least 57 civilians were killed.

Eighteen of the 96 U.S. vessels in the harbor were sunk or severely damaged.

Of the eight battleships in the harbor, three were sunk, one was capsized and four severely damaged. Also sunk or severely damaged were three light cruisers and three destroyers.

The attack destroyed 161 Navy and Army planes and seriously damaged 102.
