Foundations give $120,000 to Wick Neighbors

YOUNGSTOWN — Wick Neighbors Inc. received $120,000 from two foundations to advance its proposed $100 million Wick District-Smoky Hollow plan.

The organization announced Friday that it received $100,000 from the John and Denise York Foundation and $20,000 from the Home Savings Charitable Foundation.

The area takes in 66 acres bounded by Wick, Andrews, Rayen and Madison avenues.

The development proposal includes 270 units of new housing, 20,000 square feet of retail space, 10 acres of park and public space, and 32,000 linear feet of infrastructure improvements.

The York Foundation money will be used to supervise development and ensure that the project is implemented as planned.

The Home Savings money will be used for work related to the predevelopment agreement between Wick Neighbors; Zaremba Inc., the Cleveland firm handling the project’s development; the city; and Youngstown State University, the largest property owner in the Wick District-Smoky Hollow area.
