Occupations: Farmer, wool broker and tannery operator in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and New York.

The raid: Raided federal arsenal at Harper’s Ferry, Va., Oct. 16, 1859, hoping to inspire anti-slavery rebellion. Was captured the next day, tried for treason and convicted; hanged Dec. 2, 1859, in Charles Town, Va.
