BASKETBALL
AT THE CHEVY CENTRE

The third annual Youngstown-Warren Roundball Classic has seven games Saturday over about a 12-hour span that should fill the fix of any basketball junkie. There’s three girls games in the morning and early afternoon, followed by four boys games. And you can see them all for $12; that’s a steal, considering that’s the same price you’ll pay for one game at the boys state tournament in March. Potentially, the best games are the East-Brookfield girls game and the East-Ursuline and Warren Harding-Farrell boys games.

WRESTLING
AT URSULINE

The 2007-08 season gets underway this weekend with a four-team matchup between the host Irish, Boardman, Salem and Hubbard. The Spartans, based on past seasons, should be the favorite, but one of the neat things about an early-season quad is finding out who’s been conditioning and who’s been, well, not. There’s some other good matchups, including dual between Fitch and Uniontown Lake and the East Liverpool tournament.

CANFIELD
AT BOARDMAN

Two of the area’s premier girls programs square off Monday night. The Spartans feature senior Courtney Schiffauer, who averages about 25 points per game last season, and sophomore Daryce Moore, who scored about 16 per contest. Canfield will counter with a trio of seniors — Kate Popovec, Bryanne Halfhill and Melissa West — who combined to score nearly 40 points per game last season. Then there’s the coaches — Ron Moschella of Boardman and Pat Pavlansky of Canfield — who are almost as entertaining on the sidelines as the players.

SALEM
AT HOWLAND

Another good girls basketball rivalry, this early-season Metro Athletic Conference showdown takes place next Wednesday. The Quakers have six letter winners returning from last year’s squad that finished 15-6 overall, including Amy Scullion, a sophomore who led Salem in scoring, rebounding and assists. The Tigers will counter with a talented trio — Kelly Barzak, Allie Airhart and Alexa Williams are averaging a combined 45 points per game.

SWIMMING

Youngstown State’s natatorium will be the site of a four-team meet Saturday. Boardman, Canfield and Warren Harding welcome Wooster for a meet that starts at 3 p.m. Senior Eric Davis leads a talented Canfield squad that returned five state-qualifiers from last season. The Cardinals will take on a Boardman team led by state qualifiers Conner O’Halloran and Mike Barringer.
