Reviewing sign zoning rules

Signs used by businesses to advertise sales were the main focus.

MINERAL RIDGE — The Weathersfield Township Zoning Commission reviewed sign zoning regulations already in force in Canfield Township to see if those rules are applicable here.

The regulations had been presented to the commission for its review and possible implementation in the township earlier this year by June Lucas, a township resident and member of the township’s beautification committee.

The commission focused on portions of the Canfield law that deal with temporary signs to advertise sale items at businesses. Among the Canfield regulations are rules that relate to business advertising and special event signs.

Canfield requires that no advertising devices, portable or other media, are permitted over the sidewalk or other public way.

No more than two free-standing advertising devices are permitted on single-use lots, and they should not exceed 64 square feet in area.

Signs with flashing lights on, in or around advertising signs are not permitted. Moving parts are also prohibited, and no sign can contain banners, posters, pennants, ribbons, streamers or similar fixed or moving devices.

The commission will finalize language from the Canfield laws to be incorporated into the township’s current zoning law on signs at its January meeting. The township zoning board will then send the changes to the Trumbull County Planning Commission. After that, the township will have a public hearing in February to get the public’s input on the signs.
