Look for a temporary break from the snowfall

YOUNGSTOWN — The Mahoning Valley should get a reprieve from the snow today — but it will only be temporary.

From Saturday to Wednesday, the first five days of December, 11 inches of snow fell at the Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport in Vienna, where the National Weather Service tracks weather for the Valley.

In comparison, the Valley normally averages 1.5 inches of snow during the first five days of December.

Also, the snow accumulation during the first five days of this month is not too far from the average snowfall of 12.2 inches the Valley averages for the entire month of December.

While that is higher than average, it’s “nothing out of the ordinary,” said Tom King, a National Weather Service meteorologist in Cleveland.

It’s Northeast Ohio in winter which means snow and low temperatures, he said.

There’s no snow in today’s forecast, but it returns shortly after midnight Friday.

The snow will probably go away Saturday, but it is expected to be replaced by freezing rain later that day with temperatures dropping into the upper 20s.

The freezing rain could turn streets icy, causing problems for motorists and for crews that salt and sand the roads, he said.

It should be warmer Sunday, with temperatures hitting the upper 40s, and Monday, with temperatures in the mid-40s, King said. Rain is likely on both days, he said.

The long-range forecast calls for a return of snow late Tuesday and Wednesday.
