Dinner to benefit Gifts for Yanks program

COLUMBIANA — Columbiana American Legion Post 290 will host a dinner from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday as a fundraiser for the program.

A minimum donation of $7 per person will be accepted for the dinner of homemade beef vegetable and ham and bean soups, fries, Coney dogs, dessert and beverage.

No reservations are required, and those wishing to donate to the program may send checks, payable to Post 290-Gifts for Yanks, to the post at 44403 state Route 14, Columbiana, OH 44408. All donations are used to buy gifts for the veterans; the post underwrites all dinner expenses.

The Gifts for Yanks program was started in 1944 by entertainers Sophie Tucker and Eddie Cantor and the American Legion, in an effort to make the holidays more joyous for hospitalized veterans.
