Unbeaten Campbell squeaks past ’Dogs


Boardman (2-1) won on the road and Liberty notched its first win.

CORTLAND — Campbell Memorial had to battle to the wire to keep its unbeaten streak alive just slipping past Lakeview 75-73 in boys basketball action Tuesday night.

The Red Devils (3-0) won the contest at the foul line where they connected on 26-of-34 attempts. Lakeview, which lost for the first time in two games, outscored the Red Devils 26-22 in field goals.

The contest was deadlocked after three quarters 53-53, but the Red Devils were steady from the line in the final quarter to pull out the win.

Jermaine Williams led the way for Campbell with 26 points, while Antwan Dawson added 14.

The Bulldogs were led by Jon Kittle’s 16 points while Justin Clark added 13 and Greg McCumber chipped in with 10 points.

Lakeview outrebounded the Red Devils 31-21 with McCumber leading the way with eight.

East 76, Beaver Local 57

YOUNGSTOWN — Kenny Carter had 18 points, three rebounds and two assists and Jamayle Roland added 17 points, three rebounds, three steals and two assists to lead East.

East took a 35-24 halftime lead and was never threatened.

Roncarlos Hilton added 13 points, four rebounds and four assists for the Panthers (2-2), while Anthony Bowers had 12 points and nine rebounds and Jurrell Burt scored 10 points with nine rebounds.

Ethan Russell scored 25 points and grabbed seven rebounds, while Zach Zelinsky added 21 points and seven rebounds for Beaver Local (0-3).

Boardman 64,
Ashtabula Lakeside 57

ASHTABULA — Boardman made 11 of 14 free throws in the fourth quarter, including 6 of 6 by sophomore J.T. Moore as the Spartans (2-1) prevailed on the road.

Devron Martin, a junior, had the bulk of his 22 points on slick moves to the hoop for the Spartans, who went ahead for good at 53-51.

Eric Soller had 20 points, most of which came from 3-point range or off of the junior’s four offensive rebounds. Soller had nine rebounds total.

Point guard T.J. Bowler had 21 points for the Lakeside Dragons.

Liberty 52, Struthers 43

STRUTHERS — Isaiah Bell scored 23 points, grabbed 13 rebounds and dished out three assists to lead Liberty to its first win.

Anthony Cleveland added 11 points, while Jamon Wagner had 11 rebounds for the Leopards (1-2).

Keith Karas had eight points, 11 rebounds and three assists before fouling out for Struthers (1-2). Jordan Morell added 12 points.

Howland 61, Girard 46

GIRARD — The unbeaten Tigers (3-0) broke away from a close game as they outscored the Indians (0-3) 21-13 in the fourth quarter.

Jared Kirin paced the Tigers with 15 points and he and Tyler Scott pulled down eight rebounds apiece. Nathan Cope chipped in with 14 points and he had four steals.

Brett Cubellis led the Indians with 16 points. J.J. Simpson chipped in with nine.
