NHL ROUNDUP | Tuesday’s games
Red Wings 4, Canadiens 1
MONTREAL — Pavel Datsyuk scored two unassisted goals off turnovers and Dominik Hasek stopped 15 shots to lead Detroit. Datsyuk’s second goal of the game and 11th of the season came midway through the second to restore Detroit’s one-goal lead at 2-1. He also scored 16:40 in. Niklas Kronvall and Henrik Zetterberg also scored for the Red Wings, who extended their winning streak to four. Detroit outshot Montreal 34-16 overall, including 16-5 margin in the second. Christopher Higgins scored his 11th goal for Montreal, which has lost three straight, and five of six. Canadiens rookie Carey Price stopped 30 shots. Hockey legend Gordie Howe was accompanied by Ted Lindsay, Alex Delvecchio, Marcel Pronovost and Marcel Dionne as the Canadiens honored their long-standing rivalry with Detroit in a pre-game ceremony. Jean Beliveau, Dickie Moore, Jean-Guy Talbot, Stephane Richer and Claude Lemieux represented Montreal, which celebrates its centennial in 2009. Current Red Wings defenseman Chris Chelios, who began his career with Montreal in 1983-84, also took part in the ceremony along with Canadiens coach Guy Carbonneau.
Maple Leafs 3, Predators 1
TORONTO — Wade Belak scored a rare goal and Vesa Toskala stopped 34 shots to help Toronto. Goofy goals by Nik Antropov, Matt Stajan and Belak — his first in four years — helped the Leafs win their third straight. Shea Weber scored for Nashville, and goalie Chris Mason made 12 saves. Antropov connected on the game’s first shot. Mason glided out to the top of his crease when Hal Gill wound up to take a long shot. The puck struck the stick blade of Nashville defenseman Dan Hamhuis and caromed at nearly a 90-degree angle to Antropov, who fired it into the vacated net at the 28-second mark. With 11 goals, Antropov is well on his way to topping last season’s career-best 18 — if he can avoid injuries. The 6-foot-6 Kazakh missed 28 games last season and 25 the year before. Stajan made it 2-0 in the second minute of the second period when, with his back to the net, he took a backhand swing at a knee-high puck to put it behind Mason for his sixth of the season. Belak got his first goal since Dec. 20, 2003, at 2:48 of the third period. Chad Kilger’s high, long shot hit Nashville defenseman Greg Zanon and the puck landed on Belak’s stick. With Zanon lying on the ice, the 31-year-old forward slid the puck into the open side of the net and raised his arms to celebrate his eighth career goal in his 407th NHL game.
Lightning 4, Senators 3, SO
TAMPA, Fla. — Vinny Prospal scored in the fourth round of a shootout and the Tampa Bay Lightning extended Ottawa’s losing streak to seven games. The Lightning, who blew a 3-1 lead in the final two minutes, won the shootout 2-1. Daniel Alfredsson scored twice during a three-goal third, helping the Senators tie it at 3. Alfredsson (1:57 left) and Wade Redden (1:21 remaining) completed the comeback scoring 36 seconds apart late in the period. The Senators have lost seven games in a row for the first time since Feb. 22-March 9, 1996. Mathieu Darche, Chris Gratton and Filip Kuba scored for the Lightning.
