Hours at post office
Three post offices in Mahoning County will remain open late Saturday and Dec. 15 to accommodate holiday mailers. The Austintown, Mahoning Avenue; Boardman, Boardman-Canfield Road; and Poland, West McKinley Way locations will be open until 3 p.m. those days. The post office encourages customers to mail early, said Dave Van Allen, a spokesman. “Businesses and customers may wish to send those holiday parcels using the Postal Service’s Click-N-Ship online package service with free package pickup,” he said. The services are available at the postal Web site www.usps.com/clicknship. When using first-class mail to mail cards and packages domestically and using priority mail service, the Postal Service recommends mailing by Dec. 20. After Dec. 20, the Postal Service recommends using express mail, the spokesman said. The Postal Service urges customers mailing to military service people overseas and to international locations to mail those packages as soon as possible.
Two suspects returned
YOUNGSTOWN — Two men wanted in the shooting death of James E. Dow last month were brought back to town Tuesday from Allentown, Pa., said Detective Sgt. John Elberty, a member of the FBI/Mahoning Valley Violent Crimes Task Force. Edward E. Taylor II, 19, had turned himself in to police in Allentown on Nov. 20, and Michael W. Lee, 20, was arrested there last week. They are expected to be arraigned today in municipal court. A third suspect, D’Metri Lee, who turns 18 on Friday, was arrested on the South Side last week. Dow, 28, of South Lakeview Avenue, was found shot to death in the basement of 145 Thornton Ave. on the North Side around 6:45 p.m. Nov. 18. Detective Sgt. John Kelty has said the motive was drugs and robbery.

Firefighter discipline
YOUNGSTOWN — A hearing officer’s recommendation is expected by early next week on whether discipline is warranted for city firefighter Andre “Dre” Johnson, who was arrested on an aggravated drug trafficking charge. Fire Chief John J. O’Neill Jr. said Tuesday the city’s position is that discipline is warranted now, but the position of Johnson and the union is that Johnson’s criminal trial be held first. Once the recommendation is in, O’Neill said he will discuss it with the mayor and law director. Johnson, 26, of North Fruit Street, was shot at his home Nov. 14 and police seized more than a pound of marijuana. He is free on bond, and a preliminary hearing is set for Dec. 27. O’Neill said Johnson’s sick leave runs out next week, and then he’s off the payroll.
No date in golf ball case
WARREN — A trial date has not been set for a Howland man accused of using a golf ball to assault a Warren city prosecutor and his young son. Visiting Judge Thomas Townley of Niles Municipal Court met Tuesday with Bradley J. Rushin, 46, of Howland Springs Road, who faces two misdemeanor assault charges; his attorney, Robert Shaker; and special prosecutor Terry Swauger, prosecutor in the Niles court. Dates for another pre-trial hearing and trial will be scheduled later. Rushin is accused of hitting a golf ball from the 17th hole at Old Avalon Golf Course at a June 30 birthday party being attended by Nick Graham, a city prosecutor, and his 3-year-old son, Jimmy. The party was being held at the house off the 17th. The case can’t be tried before the two Warren court judges and the other city prosecutor because of a possible conflict of interest.
