YOUNGSTOWN — A fugitive the FBI/Mahoning Valley Violent Crimes Task Force has been seeking since a bloody stabbing July 17 was arrested Tuesday in Columbus. The suspect, Thomas C. Carter Jr., 54, of Gerwig Avenue, is charged with attempted murder and felonious assault of his house mate. The victim, Charles Robinson, 38, was stabbed 16 times in an argument over a cup, police said. Detective Sgt. John Elberty, a member of the task force, said information developed here led to Columbus, and members of the FBI task force there arrested Carter. Carter, once back in town, will be arraigned in municipal court.

Firefighter saves patient

BOARDMAN — A township firefighter’s quick thinking is credited for saving the life of a nursing home resident. Firefighters were called to Ron Joy Nursing Home, Boardman-Canfield Road, shortly before 5 p.m. Nov. 23 for a resident who was in respiratory distress. The patient’s tracheotomy tube had become dislodged. The nursing home staff was attempting artificial respiration on the patient when the fire department arrived. After assessing the situation, Firefighter Cliff Phillips, a four-year veteran of the department, determined that the patient’s position needed readjusted and that the trach tube should be reinserted. When Phillips had done those two things, the woman resumed breathing on her own.

Shopping with police

LORDSTOWN — The annual Shop/Cop Program will be Thursday when police take 12 children out shopping for Christmas. The day will begin with dinner at 5:30 p.m. at the village administration building. The dinner will be prepared by the Lordstown Fabric Patches Quilt Club, and police will shop with the children at Super Kmart in Niles. Keith Cullison’s high school class raised $1,500. Other money was earned through fund-raising events and donations. Police Capt. Terry Campbell organized the event.

Springfield meeting

NEW SPRINGFIELD — Springfield Township trustees will have a special meeting regarding the host community agreement with Waste Management at 8:30 a.m. Friday at the Springfield Township Administration Building, 3475 E. South Range Road.

Landfill meeting

CHAMPION — State Sen. Capri Cafaro of Liberty, D-32nd, will host a town hall meeting about construction and demolition landfills from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday in lecture hall at Kent State University Trumbull Campus. A panel of experts will discuss Ohio Environmental Protection Agency positions and enforcement issues surrounding landfills.

CORTLAND — City council has canceled its Dec. 10 meeting.

Red Cross aids family

HADLEY, Pa. — The American Red Cross is assisting a Perry Township family whose home was damaged by fire Tuesday evening.

Multiple fire agencies responded to an emergency call from 1225 Fredonia Road about 9 p.m., according to a Mercer County 911 dispatcher. Occupants were evacuated without injury, he said.

The house sustained “extensive damage,” according to reports. The state fire marshal will be investigating the cause of the fire, though foul play is not suspected, according to reports.
