Penguins add three
YOUNGSTOWN — Women’s tennis coach Michele Grim announced the signing of three new recruits to the YSU tennis program. Gretchen Cloern, Lauren Hankle and Sarah Lynch all signed letters of intent to play on the team next fall.
Cloern, from Upper Arlington, finished with an overall record of 106-14 in high school. She was a three-time Div. I state tournament participant.
Hankle, from Petersburg, Pa., was ranked 98th nationally and third in Middle States. Last summer she won the Middle States Sectional Championship doubles tournament and was named to the Middle States National Team.
Lynch, from Gibsonia, Pa., is ranked 188 in the nation in singles with an overall record of 29-18 and is number 36 in the country at doubles. She also received four out of five stars in her national recruiting status.
Lynch began playing tennis at the age of six and has competed in the Allegheny Mountain District, Middle States Section and nationally.
In the Allegheny Mountain District she has been ranked number one in the 12, 14, 16 and 18 age brackets. Lynch also received a top ten ranking in the Middle States in the same age brackets each year.

Thunder ink player
BOARDMAN — The Mahoning Valley Thunder announced that James Peremenis has been assigned to the team by the arenafootball2 League Office for next season.
FB/LB Peremenis (6-2, 275) played last season with arenafootball2 Alabama Steeldogs.
Peremenis, joined the Steeldogs with six regular season games left on the schedule and helped the team earn a playoff berth.
James attended Carson Newman College, Tennessee and was named to the First Team All-SAC, Division 2 (South Atlantic Conference) and received an All-Southeast Conference Honorable Mention for his solid line play in 2006.
“We are fortunate to add James to the team, he is the kind of player that easily could be on an AFL roster,” Thunder coach Mike Hold said. “His size and athleticism will be a great addition at fullback for the Thunder offense.”
The Mahoning Valley Thunder open the season at home on March 29.
‘Inside Boxing’
airs Wednesday
YOUNGSTOWN — This week’s “Inside Boxing” radio show will be devoted to raising money for the family of injured Austintown police officer Ross Linert.
The program airs on WBBW-AM 1240 on Wednesday from 6-9 p.m. Mike Cefalde and Mike Cefalde Jr. are the hosts. Middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik will be the guest.
Autographed boxing gloves will be auctioned off and part of two raffles.

Bodrick is honored
GREENVILLE, Pa. — Thiel College junior guard Amber Bodrick (Cardinal Mooney) was recognized as the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week Monday by the conference office. Bodrick averaged 29 points, 11 rebounds, three assists, 2.5 blocks, and two steals in helping Thiel finish the week 2-0 and improve to 3-2 overall.
She scored a season-high 34 points in the win against Waynesburg Univ. on Saturday and grabbed a career-high 18 rebounds in the victory over Hiram College on Wednesday.
Canfield swimmers
CANTON — The Canfield High School boys swim team scored 111 points to place second in the North East Aquatic Conference relay meet at Canton McKinley High School.
The Canfield girls team scored 95 points and took second place in the NEAC.
Red Devils seek
weight room help
CAMPBELL — Campbell Memorial High School is seeking funds, donations and equipment from friends and alumni to refurbish and update its athletic weight room.
The school’s athletic weight room is in need of equipment and the school would appreciate any help from any person or organizations.
