YOUNGSTOWN — Effective Wednesday, three roads in Mill Creek MetroParks will be closed for the winter months. The streets are:
Calvary Run Drive from Milton Avenue to Belle Vista Avenue.
Chestnut Hill Drive from the Scholl Recreation Area to Canfield Road.
High Drive from West Cohasset Drive to the Scholl Recreation Area.
Building items stolen
POLAND — Township police are investigating the theft of more than $2,300 in building materials from a house under construction. An employee of Specialty Construction reported the items stolen last week from the house on Park Place. Items taken include bundles of shingles, boxes of nails, ice guard and a shower tub.
AMVETS event
CANFIELD — AMVETS Post 44 is having a ceremony at 11 a.m. Friday at the Mahoning County Veterans Memorial on the Canfield Fairgrounds to mark the 66th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor. The public is invited. State Sen. John Boccieri, D-33, of New Middletown, is the keynote speaker. John W. Twohig is chairman of the event.
Free airplane rides
NEW CASTLE, Pa. — Free airplane rides for youths ages 8 to 17 will be offered from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the New Castle Municipal Airport. The rides are being offered as part of an ongoing program of the Experimental Aircraft Association. The EAA began the Young Eagles program in 1992 intended to provide the experience of flight to 1,000,000 youths by Dec. 17, 2003, the 100th anniversary of the Wright Brothers’ first successful powered flight. The program was such a success that it has been continued. Youths from Ohio and Pennsylvania are eligible to participate in the free program. For details, caall (724) 652-5546.
Kidz Coats Campaign
WARREN — The Warren Family Mission needs coats, hats, gloves and mittens for their Kidz Coats Campaign. The items will be given to needy children this holiday season. Police arrest gunman
FARRELL, Pa. — A Fruit Avenue man is accused of firing a gun and leading police on a foot chase. Kardell Lowery, 36, is being held in the Mercer County Jail on charges of aggravated assault, resisting arrest, recklessly endangering another person, carrying a firearm without a license and being a person not permitted to carry a weapon. Southwest Mercer County Regional Police were called at 1:59 a.m. Saturday to Roamer’s Bar on Roemer Boulevard about a gunman. Police said they arrested Lowery at a nearby home after a chase and a struggle.
Trumbull GOP event
WARREN — The Trumbull County Republican Party will hold its monthly breakfast meeting at 10 a.m. Saturday at Panera Bread, 3641 Elm Road. The agenda will include meeting candidates. The Trumbull/Portage County Young Republicans will be collecting nonperishable items for their Drive for the Troops Campaign. The items will be sent to troops serving in the Middle East.
Christmas concerts
MERCER, Pa. — A series of Christmas choir concerts performed by area schools will be given at the Mercer County Courthouse in the rotunda. Most concerts are scheduled for 12:30 p.m. The first concert will be Wednesday and performed by Commodore Perry students. West Middlesex Oakview Middle School will perform Thursday. On Monday, West Middlesex will perform at 11 a.m. followed by Sharon at 12:30 p.m. Reynolds will perform next Tuesday, Sharpsville on Dec. 12, Greenville on Dec. 14, Mercer on Dec. 17, Grove City on Dec. 18, Lakeview on Dec. 19, Hickory on Dec. 20 and Farrell on Dec. 21.
