NEWTON FALLS — Newton Falls is taking part in a statewide housing improvement project totaling just over $26 million headed by the Ohio Department of Development.

The Community Housing Improvement Program Grant, provided by the ODD, was officially accepted by council on Monday, which could bring up to $316,700 for housing improvements throughout the city.

The grant is part of ODD’s Community Housing Improvement Program. The grant can be used to improve housing-related activities, including infrastructure improvements.

The grant can be used starting today until Oct. 31, 2008.

According to the ODD Web site, the grants encourage a flexible, communitywide approach to the improvement and provision of affordable housing for low- and moderate-income people.

The grant will be administered by Neighborhood Development Services of Ohio, while actual implementation of the grant will be handled by The Greater Warren-Youngstown Urban League.

“It’s a great coup for us and the city,” said councilwoman Catie Karl-Moran. She urged the public to apply if they need assistance.

“People need to apply to get the assistance they need,” said Karl-Moran.

Applicants seeking grants should contact her at NDS or the Urban League for further details on approved projects.

The application for the grant was sent in March of this year.
