Menorah lighting to be held at Eastwood Mall

NILES — A 10-foot-high menorah, the largest in the Mahoning Valley, will be illuminated at 4 p.m. Sunday in the J.C. Penney Concourse of Eastwood Mall.

The menorah will be lighted on the sixth day of Hanukkah, the eight-day festival of lights that will conclude Dec. 12. The event is free and open to the public.

The 13th annual menorah lighting is sponsored by Children of Israel Synagogue and the Jewish Community Relations Council of the Youngstown Area Jewish Federation. The event also will feature musical presentations by students from Akiva Academy, the Commission for Jewish Education and area musicians. There also will be traditional Hanukkah foods such as latkes (pancakes) and gelt (chocolate coins).

Along with the traditional program, the JCRC will begin its participation in a national environmental project, A Light Among Nations, whose purpose is to engage the Jewish community in awareness, advocacy and action to conserve energy, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote energy legislation. The program promotes the use of energy-efficient, cost-effective compact fluorescent light bulbs.
