Hunter injured by arrow from crossbow

LIBERTY — A 54-year-old Youngstown man was undergoing surgery Monday afternoon after accidentally shooting himself with a crossbow while deer hunting.

The township fire department would not release his name because of privacy laws.

Fire Capt. Ron Stauffer said the Falls Avenue man was climbing into a tree stand about 10:30 a.m. some three-quarters of a mile off Logan Gate Road behind the former Youngstown Racquet Club.

He said the man’s crossbow was cocked and loaded and it discharged while he was climbing, the arrow striking him in the leg.

Stauffer said the wounded man was with three other hunters, one of whom called 911 on a cell phone and met rescuers at the road to lead them to the hunter.

Firefighters were able to use all-terrain vehicles to get him back onto Logan Gate. He was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown.
