Penn State headed to Alamo: Penn State is going back to the Alamo Bowl. The Nittany Lions (8-4) accepted a bid Friday to play in the Dec. 29 bowl game in San Antonio against a Big 12 team — likely either Texas Tech or Texas A&M. The final determination will probably be made Sunday, after the Bowl Championship Series matchups are announced. It will be coach Joe Paterno’s record 34th bowl appearance — 22 of them victories — and the 500th game of his coaching career (371-125-3). Penn State’s only other appearance in the Alamo Bowl was in 1999, a 24-0 win over the Aggies.

New deal for Bowden: Bobby Bowden and Florida State are finalizing a deal that would keep him on the Seminoles sideline next year, and maybe longer. Bowden’s attorney, Russ Campbell of Birmingham, Ala., confirmed Friday that the university and his client have a deal. “We’ve come to a handshake agreement,” Campbell said in a statement from his office. “It hasn’t been finalized yet.” The agreement allows Bowden, now 78, to coach for as long as he wants, according to the statement.

Georgia Tech courts Edsall: Randy Edsall has led Connecticut to a 9-3 season and a bid to the Meineke Car Care Bowl. It’d be intriguing — and perhaps convenient — if Georgia Tech were a surprise selection as the Atlantic Coast Conference representative to face the Huskies. Edsall, a former Georgia Tech assistant, might just be the Yellow Jackets’ next coach. A UConn official said Thursday night Edsall traveled to Atlanta for an interview with Georgia Tech. Meanwhile, Baltimore Ravens coach Brian Billick is promoting the possible candidacy of assistant coach Rick Neuheisel, the former Colorado and Washington coach.

Gundy gets 1-year extension: Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy received a one-year contract extension Friday after leading the Cowboys to their second straight bowl game. That would keep Gundy, who gained notoriety for a postgame outburst at a columnist, at the school through 2013. It’s subject to approval by the board of regents next week. Gundy, a former Oklahoma State quarterback, is 17-19 in three seasons. He led the Cowboys to a 4-7 record in 2005 and to the Independence Bowl last season. The Cowboys are awaiting their bowl destination after going 6-6 this season.
