Buchanan watch list

PHILADELPHILA, Pa. — Youngstown State senior linebacker James Terry has been named to the Buck Buchanan Award's Preseason Watch List, the Sports Network announced recently.

The Buck Buchanan Award recognizes the top defensive player in the Football Championship Subdivision.

Montemarano has 300

STRUTHERS — Dan Montemarano’s first game of the 2007-2008 bowling season was a 300 during Charlie’s Service/R.J. Trucking League action at Holiday Bowl on Aug. 28.

Montemarano, the league secretary, finished with a 739 set, second only to Chris Colaizzi’s 755.

Thunder staff move

BOARDMAN — The Mahoning Valley Thunder announced that Ron Armour, the Thunder’s director of operations and marketing has accepted a position with the arenafootball2 league office in Chicago.

Armour will serve as the director of team development with the league.

Manfull carries
SRU to victory

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. — Corey Manfull rushed for 145 yards on 25 carries and scored four touchdowns Thursday night to lead Slippery Rock University to a 51-24 season-opening win over Seton Hill.

Manfull scored on runs of 3, 1, 8 and 5 yards to lead an attack that accumulated 487 yards in total offense.

SRU’s Nate Crookshank completed 12 of 24 passes for 187 yards and two TDs. Terry Grossetti had four receptions for 82 yards, Paul Favers caught an 18-yard TD pass and Dallas Richardson hauled in a 9-yard scoring toss to lead the receiving effort.

Seton Hill finished with 320 yards in total offense, 91 rushing and 229 passing.

East Palestine High
to dedicate stadium

EAST PALESTINE — East Palestine city schools will be dedicating its new football stadium just prior to the 7 p.m. kickoff time versus LaBrae tonight. The dedication ceremony will begin at 6:30 p.m.

Speedway's final
battles set Saturday

HARTFORD - The curtain will fall on the season-long drama of Sharon Speedway's FANtastic Five points battles Saturday night when champions are crowned following one more night of fast and furious racing on the 3/8-mile oval. The night's action will be sponsored by Trumbull Soil and Water Conservation and Mel Grata Toyota.

The closest battle has developed in the Warren Harley-Davidson Sprints division where Bob Flemlee holds just a seven-point lead over second-place Kevin Schaeffer. 

The Gibson-Governor Insurance V-8 Modifieds division championship battle is a close one, too. Del Rougeux sits in first, just 50 points ahead of Brian Swartzlander.

Another tight title fight is going on in the Coy Brothers Trucking E-Mods division in which Howard Fraley has the top spot, but Jeff Sharp is just 23 points behind him.

The top spot in the Tom's Sewer & Drain Service Pure Stocks division is a little more clear cut with Steve D'Apolito leading Michael Aley by 137 points.

Guy Griffin enjoys a 103-point lead over Eric Williams in the Limited Sprints division going into the final race.

Tickets for Saturday's show are $11 for adults (16 and older), $5 for kids (12-15) and free for children 11 and younger.  Pit passes are $22, and the pit gate opens at 3 p.m.

Beckham to miss
weeks with sprain

LOS ANGELES — David Beckham could miss the rest of the Los Angeles Galaxy’s season after being diagnosed with a sprained right knee.

The English midfielder underwent an MRI exam that confirmed he sprained the medial collateral ligament in his knee.

Beckham, 32, was injured in a tackle with Pachuca midfielder Fernando Salazar in the first half of Wednesday night’s SuperLiga title match. The Galaxy lost 4-3 on penalty kicks.
