Second bomb threat in 2 days

AKRON (AP) — The University of Akron received its second bomb threat Thursday in two days, this time e-mailed to the student-run radio station. Police arrested a suspect in the second threat.

An employee at WZIP-FM discovered an anonymous e-mail around 8 a.m. containing a bomb threat directed at Kolbe Hall where the station is located, said university spokesman Ken Torisky.

The university shut down the building and police K-9 units searched for explosive materials. Torisky did not know how many people were evacuated. The building reopened at 12:15 p.m.

Campus police arrested Jason D. Ford, 27, of Akron, in Thursday’s threat, Torisky said. He was be turned over the Summit County jail to be booked on felony counts of inducing panic and making a false alarm, Torisky said. Ford is not a student.

Details of the arrest weren’t immediately available. There was no phone listing for Ford.

The university closed classrooms, labs and offices in its Auburn Science and Engineering building on Wednesday, after a secretary in a dean’s office received an anonymous e-mail that included a bomb threat. The building reopened at 4 p.m.

The FBI also was looking into bomb threats Wednesday at Kenyon College. The central Ohio college in Gambier received six separate bomb threats in a general admissions e-mail account.

Law enforcement officials have said there was no evidence linking the college bomb threats with those at grocery and discount stores across the country.
