Thursday’s games

TOP 25

No. 2 LSU 45, Miss. St. 0

STARKVILLE, Miss — The second-ranked LSU Tigers made it look easy against Mississippi State. Amazingly easy. LSU intercepted MSU quarterback Michael Henig six times and pulled away in the second half, drubbing the outmanned Bulldogs. LSU has now won 15 of its last 16 games against the Bulldogs, with the lone exception being State’s 17-16 victory over the Tigers in 1999. LSU needed 20 minutes on the stadium clock to score its first touchdown.

No. 10 Louisville 73, Murray State 10

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — New coach. Same old Brian Brohm. The Louisville quarterback threw for 375 yards and four touchdowns and the 10th-ranked Cardinals sparkled in coach Steve Kragthorpe’s debut. Brohm led Louisville (1-0) to touchdowns on each of the Cardinals’ first eight drives, guiding an attack that looked awfully similar to the wide-open system that former coach Bobby Petrino used to lead the Cardinals to national prominence.

No. 16 Rutgers 38, Buffalo 3

PISCATAWAY, N.J. — Ray Rice rushed for 184 yards and three touchdowns, Tiquan Underwood had 10 catches for a school-record 248 yards and Mike Teel passed for a career-best 328 yards as the Scarlet Knights opened their most anticipated season.

MID-AMERICAN CONFERENCE

Kent State 23, Iowa State 14

AMES, Iowa — Julian Edelman threw for 161 yards and a touchdown to lead Kent State in the debut of new Cyclones coach Gene Chizik. Eugene Jarvis added 113 yards rushing for Kent State (1-0), which won despite committing three red-zone turnovers. Iowa State (0-1) couldn’t take advantage, and Kent State seized control with two scores late in the third quarter.

Miami (Ohio) 14, Ball State 13

MUNCIE, Ind. — Brandon Murphy scored on a 6-yard touchdown run with 17 seconds left in the game as Miami of Ohio defeated Ball State. Murphy rushed for 123 yards and two touchdowns for the RedHawks in the opening game for both Mid-American Conference teams.
