Wednesday’s other games

AMERICAN LEAGUE

Royals 5, Tigers 0

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Esteban German hit a go-ahead triple in a five-run first inning against Andrew Miller, and Kansas City got only the second shutout against Detroit this year. Miller (5-5) got only two outs in his 13th major league start, allowing five runs, five hits, two walks and two hit batters. Detroit has lost eight of its last 12 games. Zack Greinke pitched four shutout innings in his second strong start since rejoining the rotation on Aug. 24. On a strict pitch count, the right-hander allowed six hits, struck out seven and walked one.

Yankees 4, Red Sox 3

NEW YORK — Roger Clemens shut down his original team, allowing only two hits and outpitching a much younger ace. Alex Rodriguez hit his major league-leading 44th home run, and the Yankees got another big hit from Johnny Damon to earn their second consecutive win in the series. Josh Beckett was tagged for a career-high 13 hits by the Yankees, who turned to Mariano Rivera in the eighth inning for a four-out save.

Angels 8, Mariners 2

SEATTLE — Jered Weaver won for the fourth time in five decisions and Garret Anderson had four hits as Los Angeles opened a five-game lead in the West. Vladimir Guerrero homered and went 8-for-14 in the series as the Angels improved to 11-4 against Seattle this year.

Athletics 5, Blue Jays 4, 11 innings

OAKLAND, Calif. — Jack Hannahan hit a game-ending single with two outs to help Oakland snap a five-game losing streak. Hannahan’s big hit came after Huston Street blew a 4-2 lead in the ninth by allowing solo homers to Lyle Overbay and pinch-hitter Matt Stairs — the first time the closer has allowed two homers in an outing in his career.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

Brewers 6, Cubs 1

CHICAGO — Ben Sheets came off the disabled list to give Milwaukee a lift and Ryan Braun hit a bases-loaded double during a four-run seventh inning for the Brewers. Sheets (11-4) worked six innings, allowing six hits and a run to get his first win since June 30 as Milwaukee kept Chicago right-hander Carlos Zambrano winless over the last month. Sheets had been on the DL since July 16 with a sprained finger on his pitching hand and had also been slowed by a blister.

Astros 7, Cardinals 0

HOUSTON — Roy Oswalt allowed four hits and struck out nine in seven dominant innings as Houston gave Cecil Cooper his first win since replacing Phil Garner as manager. Lance Berkman and Luke Scott hit solo homers, Berkman added an RBI double off St. Louis starter Kip Wells and Houston won for just the third time in nine games.

Phillies 3, Mets 2

PHILADELPHIA — Marlon Anderson was ruled out on a game-ending interference call at second base, negating a possible tying run and giving Philadelphia the win. The Mets had runners on the corners with one out when pinch-hitter Shawn Green hit a slow roller to shortstop Jimmy Rollins, who shoveled the ball to Tadahito Iguchi at second. Anderson made a rough slide at Iguchi outside the line and knocked the second baseman down as he threw to first. It was ruled interference and a double play, ending the game and sending Anderson into a fit.

Dodgers 10, Nationals 9, 12 innings

LOS ANGELES — Shea Hillenbrand hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning and a sacrifice fly in the 12th as Los Angeles rallied from a five-run deficit to finish a three-game sweep. James Loney drove in four runs for the Dodgers, who also got home runs from Russell Martin and Matt Kemp. Jeff Kent had four hits, including a leadoff single that started the winning rally.

Rockies 8, Giants 0

SAN FRANCISCO — Jeff Francis pitched a six-hitter for his second career shutout, Garrett Atkins homered twice and Colorado avoided a three-game sweep. Francis (14-6) struck out three and walked one in his second career complete game. The other was a two-hit shutout against St. Louis on July 24 last year. Atkins had his third career multi-homer game and second this year, driving in four runs. Kaz Matsui went 4-for-4 with two doubles. Chris Iannetta and Brad Hawpe each hit solo homers for the Rockies. Noah Lowry (14-8) lost for the first time since July 15. He allowed seven runs and seven hits in three innings.

Braves 7, Marlins 4

MIAMI — Matt Diaz homered twice and Atlanta beat Dontrelle Willis to salvage a win at the end of a disappointing trip. Atlanta rookie Yunel Escobar homered leading off the first inning for the first time, and he scored three times. The Braves, who hurt their playoff chances by going 4-6 on a 10-day trip, return home to face the NL East-leading New York Mets this weekend. The last-place Marlins lost for the 13th time in their past 15 games. Willis (8-14) allowed six runs in 51⁄3 innings, hiking his ERA to 5.07. He has won only once in his past 17 starts. Willis did hit his second homer of the season. Buddy Carlyle (8-5), who had lost his past three starts, gave up both homers but departed after five innings with a 7-3 lead.
