CHESTNUT TREE Revival effort

About the chestnut tree revival effort:

Tree trove: A group of American chestnut trees is growing in and around a quarry in Northeast Ohio, defying a fungus that has killed most chestnuts.

Survival secret: Experts believe it might be because the trees are in very acidic soil or because they are growing in an elevated area that gives them greater protection from blight spores.

Hybrid hopes: Experts are trying to capture the genes of the trees to help come up with a blight-resistant hybrid. It is hoped that the hybrid will take root and spread.
