Howland and Quakers win MAC openers


Salem’s season-opening match was a victory over
Canfield.

STRUTHERS — Taylor Summerfield made five points, six kills and 24 assists as the Howland High volleyball team defeated Struthers by scores of 25-12, 25-17, 25-15.

Kelly Barzak scored three points on three aces and made 14 kills for the Tigers (1-1, 1-0 Metro Athletic Conference). D.J. Hromyak made five kills and 10 assists.

For the Wildcats (0-3, 0-1), Taylor Benton had nine points, Lauren Perry made five points and 13 digs while Kaitlyn Opritza made seven blocks

CANFIELD — Katie Scullion made four aces, 16 kills and three blocks for the Quakers (1-0, 1-0 MAC).

Amy Scullion had 15 kills, Tay Toothman 37 assists and Sarah Brobeck three kills and three blocks.

For Canfield (0-3, 0-1), Jackie Nentwick made eight kills and eight blocks while Rachel O’Hara had 14 assists, Kalie Luklann six blocks and six kills and Amanda Colonna six points.

CANTON — For Fitch (0-1, 0-1 Federal League), Sam Kazbial made 26 hits, 12 kills, 10 blocks, one assist and three digs.

Rory Sachire made seven hits, four kills and four blocks while Becca Evans made 18 hits, eight kills, five blocks, one assist and 10 digs.

Also for the Falcons, Krissy Roberts made eight hits, seven kills and two blocks while Lindsay Vonschwarz made 21 hits, 11 kills, 17 assists and seven digs. Kara Roche made 29 assists and16 digs while Michelle Basista made 21 digs.

YOUNGSTOWN — Alexandra Hines led the Panthers (2-0) with nine blocks and 11 kills. Bethany Hines had 12 assists.

HANOVERTON — Ashley Davis scored 10 points and had 10 kills to spark the Tigers (1-2).

Whitney Yeager had eight points, 12 kills and eight blocks. Kallie Rogers had six points and 26 assists. Lindsay Firth led United with 12 kills. Casey Fennis had 33 assists and Maggie Sell had eight digs.

NORTH JACKSON — Jennifer Robsky scored 20 points, with a ace to spark the Bluejays (1-0).

Alyssa Chine had 10 points and 16 kills. Jessica Shively had 39 sets and 20 assists. The Blue Devils (1-2) were led by Clarice Ferrando with 10 points and two aces. Heather Monoski had nine points.

NEW WATERFORD — Chelsea Bowker scored 11 points with seven aces, 11 kills, two blocks and six digs to spark the Rebels (2-1).

Paige McElroy had nine points, 22 assists, five aces and three digs.

Ashley Thompson paced the Blue Devils (0-2) with four points and six kills. Emily Smith had 30 assists.

For Southington (0-1), Lindsay Cameron scored nine points, Taylor Cooper made six kills and Carolyn Ponzi made four digs.
