THE PROJECT Details

The idea: Having the University of Michigan students study ways to encourage Youngstown State University students to come to the downtown was the idea of Hunter Morrison, director of Urban and Regional Studies at YSU.

Cost: In June the Youngstown Central Area Community Improvement Corp., a downtown redevelopment agency board, authorized giving YSU up to $4,000 to provide the students with transportation and housing during their three-day visit in late July. There were no other costs.

Internet: The 14 students’ proposals will be available for viewing on the Internet sometime in the future, said Reid Dulberger, the CIC’s acting president and the Regional Chamber’s executive vice president.

Use: Bill D’Avignon, the city’s Community Development Agency director, said he hopes at least a couple of the students’ suggestions will be used. For instance, some ideas might make it into future 10-year plans for the city.
