Shuttle for senior citizens

Shuttle for senior citizens

CANFIELD — Senior citizens will be able to hitch a ride around the Canfield Fair on Wednesday and Friday from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. The shuttles, which will actually be wagons pulled by tractors, will cart seniors among 11 locations inside the fair gates. Grabbing a seat on one of the wagons should not be a problem because there will be eight wagons running simultaneously and each one can hold around 28 passengers at a time, according to Ed Schaefer, supervisor of the program. “The main reason for [the shuttle] is to help the seniors get around the fair easier,” Schaefer said. Riders will be provided with a map when they board that will show them exactly where the stops are. There will also be a Junior Fair Board member in each wagon to tell passengers what kinds of activities are around the stops. Schaefer said he runs the shuttles only Wednesday and Friday because those are the designated Senior Citizens Days. They do not run Thursday because it is Youth Day, and on the weekend the shuttles are needed outside the fair transporting people from parking lots to the gates. Schaefer also pointed out that the weekend crowd is too large to run the shuttle safely inside the fair.

Hog buy to aid mission

NORTH JACKSON — North Jackson’s First Federated Church hopes to help some folks to “hog heaven.” The church plans to buy a hog at the Canfield Junior Fair 4-H auction Thursday. The meat will be donated to the Rescue Mission of Mahoning Valley. “This idea seemed like a natural extension of our church’s food pantry mission,” said the church’s pastor, Brad Jagger. “It will help feed those in need at the Rescue Mission, as well as helping our local youth by supporting their 4-H projects.” First Federated Church is an interdenominational church in North Jackson next to Jackson-Milton High School. Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard is a mission within the church that serves community families with food staples and necessities they might not otherwise be able to afford. The mission is open Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the church. For more information, go to www.firstfederatedchurch.net.
