Howland schools will undergo assessment


Assessments will be used to plan for buildings in the future.

HOWLAND — An assessment of Howland School District’s buildings and enrollment will be complete in November.

Both assessments will be completed through the Ohio School Facilities Commission.

Superintendent John Sheets told the board Monday the results will be compared with the district’s master plan dealing with its physical structures. The evaluations begin in October.

The commission offers the service to school districts that don’t quality for state construction funds for school buildings.

Based on a resident survey, the board has been leaning toward placing an issue on the November 2008 ballot to construct a new high school.

Sheets said the information from the commission assessments will be used to determine whether additions are needed at other buildings and what should be included in the high school, such as an auditorium.

Other action

In other business, the board:

UEntered into an agreement with the Trumbull County Chapter of the American Red Cross to provide building use for emergency services in the events of a disaster.

UNamed Frank Thomas, high school principal, the board’s hearing officer for middle school suspension and Barbara Sullivan, middle school principal, for high school suspensions.

UNamed Michael Pollifront acting high school principal when the principal is absent.

UAppointed Thomas Scirocco acting middle school principal when the principal and assistant principle are absent.

UAccepted the resignation of Shirley Omogrosso, high school art teacher, who has been employed by the district since 1982.

UAuthorized the final payment to Gymnasium Equipment Inc. of $136,049 for the football bleacher replacement and renovation project that cost a total $164,205.
