savers available

YOUNGSTOWN — The 2007 Youngstown State football senior poster is available at the YSU Bookstore and the YSU Athletic Ticket Office.

This year's poster features the slogan "Our House" as the Penguins celebrate their success at Stambaugh Stadium during the upcoming campaign.

Also, new screen savers for football, volleyball and soccer can be accessed through www.YSUsports.com's Giant Eagle Fan Central link on the home page of the website.

Fraley, Drost named
all-tournament team

PHILADELPHIA — Youngstown State senior Jessica Fraley and freshman Abigail Drost were named to the Temple Invitational volleyball All-Tournament team after leading the Penguins to a 4-0 record over the weekend.

Fraley averaged 3.19 kills per game, 1.44 digs per game and 0.81 blocks per game while hitting at a .273 clip. Fraley recorded a double-double with 13 kills and 13 digs against LaSalle, 17 kills with a .433 hitting percentage against Lehigh, eight kills and a .438 hitting percentage against Rider and 13 kills against Temple.

Drost averaged 2.31 kills and 3.62 digs per game. She posted a double-double with 12 kills and 13 digs against Lehigh and just missed double-doubles with nine kills and 19 digs against LaSalle and nine kills and 12 digs against Temple.

Niles seniors end
season at 7-14

CANTON — The Niles Seniors baseball team lost two games Saturday at Munson Stadium to the Massillon and Girard Oldtimers squads to end the regular season with a 7-14 record.

Ron DeVincenzo, Mickey Williams and Tom Welsh each had two hits to lead Massillon past Niles, 4-2. Niles was led by Dave Elston with two singles and one RBI.

Girard scored a 9-4 win over Niles behind Tom Hanna’s two-run double and a sacrifice fly for three RBIs, and Neil Lambert with two hits and three RBIs. For Niles, Rich Coulter, George Chomas and Joe Casale had two hits each.

Prep volleyball

BELOIT — Dayna Daltorio had 10 kills to lead Cardinal Mooney to a three-set victory over West Branch in a high school volleyball match Saturday. The scores were 25-20, 25-20, 25-14.

Kelly Donoghue added 29 assists, three assists and 16 points, while Sarah Pelini had 12 digs for the Cardinals (1-0).

For West Branch (0-1), Katie Sellarolli had 28 passes, three digs, 10 serve receptions and 11 points; Michelle Sosnick had nine kills and three blocks; Amanda Donithan had three digs, and Karli Kitzmiller had 12 assists.

Beachum gets SVC
football honors

YOUNGSTOWN — Cardinal Mooney senior Brandon Beachum was picked the Steel Valley Conference football player of the week.

Against Mentor, Beachum ran 28 times for 175 yards and two touchdowns.

Sorenstam, McGee
to tie the knot

ORLANDO, Fla. — LPGA Hall of Fame golfer Annika Sorenstam and her boyfriend of two years, Mike McGee, were engaged on Saturday at their home here.

No plans have been made yet for a wedding date.

McGee is the son of former PGA tour golfer Jerry McGee of East Palestine.

WNBA’s Shock tops
Liberty, 76-73

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. — The defending champion Detroit Shock survived to defend their WNBA crown for another day.

But not before being pushed to the brink of elimination in the opening round of the Eastern Conference playoffs. Cheryl Ford scored 11 points, capped by a wide-open layup with 44 seconds remaining, and the Shock held off the New York Liberty 76-73 in Game 2 Sunday at The Palace to force a decisive game Tuesday.

Mercury sweeps Storm
reach Western finals

PHOENIX — Cappie Pondexter scored 25 points as the Phoenix Mercury blew a 22-point, second-half lead but recovered for a 95-89 win Sunday and a sweep of the Seattle Storm in the best-of-three WNBA Western Conference semifinals.

Diana Taurasi, who had 20 points and six assists, hit a 3-pointer and made a free throw in the final 2:30 after Seattle had tied it at 85 with 2:50 left. The Storm trailed 60-38 with 8:21 left in the third.
