Would-be robber
decides to take off
YOUNGSTOWN — A Cameron Avenue woman closed her door on a would-be robber, who then fired a shot through the door. The woman, 36, told police that she had been dropped off at her home shortly after 4 a.m. Sunday. She walked up the steps to unlock her door when someone ran up behind her and stuck something in her back, according to police. She turned and saw a man wielding a baseball bat and wearing a red and white bandanna over his face. He started to yell as she unlocked the door, went in and started to close it. The man fired one round that broke the glass in the storm door and went into the home, according to police. The woman wasn’t injured. Police arrived but didn’t find the man.
Horse futurity show
planned at fairgrounds
CANFIELD — The Canfield Fairgrounds will host the Northern Ohio Quarter Horse Futurity Show on Sept. 29-30. Horses will be tested in many different events such as jumping, reining, barrel racing, cutting, roping and pole bending. Additionally, halter classes, which judge horses based on balance, muscling and breed characteristics, will be held. Each year, AQHA approves more than 2,700 shows and special events worldwide. Competitors at any of these shows can earn points that turn into awards or cash at the end of the year. Horses also have the opportunity to qualify for the AQHA world championship show just by participating in one of approved events. For more information about AQHA go to www.aqha.com.

Christians encouraged
to sing at fairgrounds
CANFIELD — As has occurred for many years, on the Sunday morning of the Canfield Fair, singers are invited to assemble at the stage near the grandstand/concourse to sing during the 9:30 Ecumenical Church service. A choir rehearsal will begin at 9 a.m., followed by the presentation of the anthems during the worship service. Music this year will include “Come Christians Join to Sing” and “This Is My Father's World.” All participants will be reimbursed their admission fee for that day, which is Sept. 2. Additional special music will be presented by Tom and Kelly Scurich. About 40 or so members are sought for this choir.
