NOTEBOOK Scrappers

Live In Peace: Patty Smith of Warren was the recipient Sunday of the Scrappers’ most expensive promotional giveaway to date. The catch? Smith is hopeful she doesn’t have to “cash in” her prize anytime soon. Smith won an all-expense paid funeral courtesy of Herron Funeral Home of Warren. Smith’s name was drawn among the hundreds of fans who signed up throughout the course of the season. “I’ve never won anything in my life, so to win something like this is a shock,” Smith said. “I’m not looking forward to receiving my prize, but I know it’s inevitable so in a way I feel like I’ve already been rewarded.” Smith is an avid baseball fan who is a regular at Eastwood Field. She has even served as a Scrappers host family in the past. The value of Smith’s prize is estimated at anywhere from $3,000-$6,000.
Chatty Chad: When it comes to talking up a storm at Eastwood Field, it’s hard to top Chad Krispinsky. From 1999-2001 Krispinsky served as the Scrappers’ public address announcer. He then moved to the radio booth, where he called Scrappers games in 2002. Saturday, Krispinsky returned, this time as part of the Fox television crew which aired a live broadcast of the game. Fox aired a total of five games this summer. “I love coming back here doing games. This is where it all started for me,” Krispinsky said. “This organization gave me the break every broadcaster looks for.” Krispinsky noted that not much has changed since he worked the Scrappers’ first-ever home game in ‘99. “There’s still the same level of excitement. The novelty has not worn off one bit, and that’s a tribute to the Scrappers front office, and to the Indians, who continue to put quality talent on the field.”
Odds ’n Ends: Scrappers pitcher William Delage has been outstanding since being sent to the bullpen. As a starter, Delage was 0-4 with a 6.65 ERA. In four relief appearances, he has thrown 91⁄3 shutout innings with 11 strikeouts. … The Scrappers own the league’s best batting average (.282) with runners in scoring position. … The Jammers are second in the league with 42 home runs, but dead last in the league in team batting average (.231). … The Scrappers added another Gulf Coast League player to its roster. Karexon Sanchez, who batted .273 with three home runs and 21 RBIs, joined the team Sunday. The 19-year-old, who also stole 10 bases in 11 attempts, was signed by the Indians as a free agent in 2006.
