AMERICAN LEAGUE

Tigers 5, Yankees 4

DETROIT — Curtis Granderson led off the first inning with an inside-the-park homer. Bobby Seay (1-0) was awarded the win after pitching two scoreless innings of relief. The Tigers needed five pitchers after rookie starter Jair Jurrjens left in the second inning because of a sore shoulder. Phil Hughes (2-2) lost for the first time since his major league debut on April 26. He allowed five runs and four hits, including three homers, in six innings. He walked one and struck out six.

Red Sox 11, White Sox 1

CHICAGO — David Ortiz hit a two-run homer, and J.D. Drew and Bobby Kielty ended long homerless droughts to back Julian Tavarez’s first win since late June as the Red Sox finished a four-game sweep. Strangely enough, Drew’s last home run was in the same game as Tavarez’s last win: June 20 at Atlanta. Kielty homered for the first time since last Sept. 19, when he was with Oakland. The Red Sox outscored Chicago 46-7 in the series, dropping the White Sox to 18 games under .500. Tavarez (7-9) was making just his second start since the beginning of August, but struck out seven and handcuffed the White Sox to two hits in six innings.

Escobar (15-6) won his fourth straight start, allowing a run and five hits over eight innings with five strikeouts and no walks. The former Blue Jays right-hander was 14-11 with Toronto in 1999, his first full season in the majors, and spent four more seasons with them before signing with the Angels as a free agent in November 2003. Francisco Rodriguez pitched a perfect ninth for his 33rd save in 37 chances.

Twins 11, Orioles 3

BALTIMORE — The Twins ended Erik Bedard’s nine-game winning streak and completed a season’s sweep of the Orioles, getting two triples and two RBIs from Jason Bartlett. Rondell White homered for Minnesota, which finished 7-0 against Baltimore this year. The Twins’ only previous season sweeps in the AL were against Tampa Bay in 2003 and 2005.

Devil Rays 7, Athletics 4

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Carlos Pena hit two homers, and Joel Guzman had a two-run triple during a three-run fifth inning as the Devil Rays beat All-Star Dan Haren and the Athletics. B.J. Upton also went deep for the Devil Rays, who won the final three games of the four-game series for their first three-game winning streak since June 9-12. Tampa Bay has scored 33 runs during the streak. Andy Sonnanstine (3-9) won for the second time in his last three starts.

Rangers 5, Mariners 3

ARLINGTON, Texas — Sammy Sosa’s 605th career home run was his first in a month, and Vicente Padilla allowed only one run pitching into the seventh inning for the Rangers. Padilla (4-9) won for the first time since June 15, retiring 18 of 19 batters after Ichiro Suzuki led off the game with an infield single. The right-hander then gave up three straight singles and a run to start the seventh.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

Kyle Kendrick (7-3) pitched six strong innings for the victory. He gave up one run and six hits with a walk and four strikeouts.

Cardinals 4, Braves 1

ST. LOUIS — Adam Wainwright allowed a run in seven sharp innings, Juan Encarnacion homered and St. Louis handed Atlanta its fifth loss in six games. Yadier Molina and So Taguchi each drove in a run in a three-run fifth off Jo-Jo Reyes (0-2) for the Cardinals, who took two of three in the series. Mark Teixeira had two hits and Brian McCann had an RBI single in the sixth for the Braves.

Rockies 10, Nationals 5

DENVER — Matt Holliday homered, doubled and drove in three runs, and Colorado finished off a sweep of Washington. Elmer Dessens (2-1) gave up a run and three hits in six innings for his first Colorado win. It was his first win as a starter since April 25, 2004, with Arizona against San Diego. Holliday and Todd Helton had three hits each, and Troy Tulowitzki drove in three runs for the Rockies.

Giants 5, Brewers 4

SAN FRANCISCO — Pedro Feliz scored from first base on Rich Aurilia’s single to right field in the eighth inning, and San Francisco finished off a three-game sweep of Milwaukee. With two outs, Aurilia hit a high fly ball off Scott Linebrink (4-5) that landed between right fielder Corey Hart, second baseman Rickie Weeks and the foul line. Feliz scored easily when Hart’s throw traveled up the third base line.

Diamondbacks 5, Cubs 4

PHOENIX — Chris Young homered in the first and second innings and drove in four runs for Arizona. Derrek Lee hit his second career inside-the-park homer for the Cubs. Edgar Gonzalez (6-2) pitched two scoreless innings in relief of Yusmeiro Petit, who was lifted after four innings with a 5-4 lead. Jose Valverde pitched out of trouble in the ninth for his major-league leading 40th save in 46 chances.

Reds 9, Marlins 3

CINCINNATI — Catcher Ryan Jorgensen’s first grand slam helped 29-year-old Tom Shearn win his long-awaited major league debut, and Cincinnati won its sixth straight. The rookie pitcher and his minor-league catcher kept the Reds on their best surge of the season.
