Counselors to be at fair

CANFIELD — Counselors from the Cleveland Vet Center will be at the Mahoning Veterans Memorial at the Canfield Fairgrounds on Thursday and Friday between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Combat veterans can speak with the counselors about individual readjustment counseling, referral for benefits assistance, group readjustment counseling, marital and family counseling, job counseling and placement, sexual trauma counseling, community education and substance abuse information and referral. Becomes Army major

Army Maj. Terry R. Brady was promoted to his present rank while assigned as a training developer/instructor team chief with the 84th Training Command at Fort McCoy, Wis. Brady, who has 15 years in the military, is the son of Sally Buttermore of Youngstown. His wife, Stacy, is the daughter of James Gorder of Elgin, Minn. In 1998, he received a bachelor's degree from Augusta State University, Ga.

Set to go to Iraq

Army Maj. David Spess of Vienna, former commander of the Regional Training Site — Maintenance at Fort Indiantown Gap, Pa., is scheduled to deploy with the 3rd Army to Iraq. During his tenure as commander of the regional training site, the unit trained some 600 soldiers in several occupational specialties primarily focused on maintenance of ground equipment such as Bradley Fighting Vehicles, tanks and various other types of wheeled and tracked equipment.

Since his change of command Aug. 1, Spess has been conducting pre-deployment training at Ft. McPherson, Ga. In Iraq, he will be branch chief of the Multi-National Logistics Division, where his responsibilities will include management of supplies and equipment used to support U.S. and Coalition forces.

Spess is the son of Victor and Kathy Spess of Vienna. He graduated in 1988 from John F. Kennedy High School in Warren and is also a graduate of Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

Graduated from courses

Several area residents have graduated from Army ROTC leadership development and assessment courses at Fort Lewis, Wash., or Fort Knox, Ky. They include:

Ty A. Kegarise, a student at Slippery Rock University, Pa. He is the son of Dann J. Kegarise and Jodie L. Kegarise, both of New Castle, Pa., and a 2004 graduate of Union Area High School, New Castle.

Andrew P. Reeves, a student at John Carroll University, University Heights. He is the son Gregory A. and Nancy J. Reeves of East Palestine and is a 2004 graduate of East Palestine High School.

Joel W. Newburn, a student at Kent State University. He is the son of Paul E. Newburn Jr. of Alliance and Sharon E. Newburn of Lisbon and is a 2004 graduate of United Local High School, Hanoverton.

Joshua N. Moran, a student at Youngstown State University. He is the son of Lea T. Moran of Austintown and is a 1995 graduate of Chaney High School, Youngstown.

ACADEMY NEWS

West Point representative

CLEVELAND — Lt. Gen. Franklin Hagenbeck, superintendent of the Military Academy at West Point, along with other West Point leaders, will meet with potential admissions candidates and conduct a workshop for young people considering attending West Point beginning at 1:30 p.m. Sept. 1 in the Crowne Plaza, 777 St. Clair Ave. N.E. Also, a representative of U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown’s office will discuss the academy nomination process; and other commissioning routes, such as the Army ROTC and Officer Candidate School, will be discussed. The workshop will conclude at 3:30 p.m. in time for the tailgate party and the first Patriot Game at Cleveland Browns Stadium, where Army will play Akron University in the evening.
