School supply giveaway

WARREN — The Warren-Trumbull County NAACP and the Trumbull County Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance is hosting a school supply giveaway from 9 a.m. to noon Monday at 2051 Niles Road S.E. The items will include supplies for all pupils and are on a first-come, first-served basis. Parents must accompany children. Six local barbers also will give free haircuts.

Horseshoe tournament

NEW CASTLE, Pa. — The 2007 Pennsylvania horseshoe state tournament will be Saturday and Sept. 2 at Scotland Meadows Park in Union Township, Lawrence County. The New Castle, Lawrence County Horseshoe League is hosting the event, which starts at 8 a.m. both days in the park. Throughout each day, multiple classes including men’s, women’s, elder’s and junior’s will each compete for these state titles. Class “A” men’s division, demonstrating near perfection, will highlight each day with early afternoon competition. Admission is free, and there will be food vendors and equipment suppliers on hand.

Buddy Walk planned

WARREN — The first Buddy Walk is set for 2:30 p.m. Sept. 22 at Perkins Park. The Buddy Walk is a one-mile walk to benefit families affected by Down syndrome. The deadline to register has been extended to Friday. Late registration will be accepted the day of the walk with an increase of $2 per person. The walk is sponsored by Putting Downs First, a support group in Trumbull County that is an affiliate of the National Down Syndrome Society. ‘Ride for Rescue’ set

YOUNGSTOWN — The local chapter of the Christian Motorcycle Association is hosting a “Ride for Rescue” Sept. 15 to benefit the Rescue Mission of the Mahoning Valley. The event begins at 11 a.m. at the construction site of Harley-Davidson Biketown store on state Route 46 in Austintown. Participants will ride until 2 p.m. The ride will conclude in Youngstown State University’s M-7 parking lot for a tailgate party before the YSU-Stoney Brook football game. Registration costs include admission to the ride, tailgate party, a parking space and a ticket to the football game.

Trustees will meet

NORTH JACKSON — Jackson Township trustees will meet in special session at 5 p.m. Tuesday at the government center, 10613 Mahoning Ave., to discuss tax abatement and the mowing of nuisance properties.

Berlin Lake regulations

BERLIN — The staff at Berlin Lake reminds visitors that shoreline fires on federal land and the placement or use of rope swings at Berlin Lake are prohibited. Violations may result in written warnings or citations from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
