All-stars fall, 6-0

PURCELLVILLE, Va. — Youngstown’s 13-year-old all-star team won on Tuesday, but lost on Wednesday during the Babe Ruth World Series.

On Wednesday, Youngstown suffered a 6-0 defeat to N.W. Bakersville, Calif.

On Tuesday, Youngstown beat Loudoun County, Va., 7-5.

Brendan Cox’s RBI single following Tim McCoy’s lead-off triple in the bottom of the sixth broke a 5-5 tie and provided the winning edge.

Loudoun Co. had jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third before James Coates’ two-run home run in the bottom of the third answered for Youngstown. Justin Wagler and Cody Pitzo batted in runs in the fourth to give Youngstown a 5-4 advantage.

Bakersfield’s win advanced the Pacific Southwest region champion into the semifinals.

Grant Watson and Ryan Metz combined to throw the four-hit shutout.

Kokrak posts lead
at U.S. Amateur

DALY CITY, Calif. — Jason Kokrak’s 3-under-par topped the two-day leader board at the U.S. Amateur, though 54 players had yet to complete all 36 holes before darkness halted stroke play.

Kokrak’s 137 was the best of the first two days, therefore, he was the top seed among 64 qualifiers for the match-play portion of the tournament. Because of a delay due to fog on Monday, the tournament was behind schedule.

Kokrak, a Warren JFK product, credited his overall score to control off the tee.

“I’m hitting a three-iron on almost every hole,” he said. “If you’re not hitting the fairway, it’s tough.”

Alex Prugh, a quarterfinalist at last year’s U.S. Amateur, was at 2 under after 36 holes, shooting a tourney-best 66. David Merkow was also at 138.

The stroke play totals did not carry over to match play.

In the first round of match play, Kokrak defeated A.J. Oleksak of Agawam, Mass., 2 and 1.
