MLB ROUNDUP \ Friday’s other games

AMERICAN LEAGUE

Red Sox 10, White Sox 1

CHICAGO — David Ortiz homered twice and Kevin Youkilis added a three-run shot as the Boston routed Chicago to take both ends of a split doubleheader. In the opener, Josh Beckett (16-5) became the major leagues’ first 16-game winner and Jason Varitek had four RBIs to lead the Red Sox to an 11-3 victory. The Red Sox’s bats kept rolling in the nightcap and made it easy for Curt Schilling (8-5), who allowed three hits and a run in six innings. The White Sox have lost 11 of 13 and fell a season-low 16 games under .500. Boston drove out struggling rookie John Danks (6-12) in a five-run fourth that featured Ortiz’s two-run homer, RBI doubles from Mike Lowell and Coco Crisp, an RBI single by Kevin Cash and two walks. In the opener, Jon Garland (8-10), allowed nine hits and six runs in seven-plus innings.

Mariners 4, Rangers 2

ARLINGTON, Texas — Jose Guillen homered and drove in the go-ahead run with an RBI single in the seventh. Guillen hit his 19th home run with two outs in the first inning, then broke a 2-all tie with a hit that scored Ichiro Suzuki. Felix Hernandez (10-6) allowed three hits and struck out seven in six innings to improve to 4-0 over his last six starts. Seattle has won seven of eight, and 19 of 26 since a season-long seven-game losing streak. Kevin Millwood (8-11) allowed four runs and 13 hits in 82⁄3 innings.

Twins 7, Orioles 4

BALTIMORE — Justin Morneau ended a career-long home run drought and Jason Kubel homered and drove in three runs, sparking a late rally for Johan Santana. Minnesota trailed 4-0 in the seventh before coming back to hand Baltimore its fourth straight loss. Kubel hit a two-run homer in the seventh and a game-tying sacrifice fly in the eighth off Jim Hoey (1-2). Morneau’s home run, his 29th, ended a drought of 108 at-bats. Coming off a 17-strikeout performance against Texas on Sunday, Santana (14-9) allowed four runs and eight hits in seven innings, striking out seven and walking one. Joe Nathan worked the ninth for his 28th save.

Devil Rays 12, Athletics 2

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — James Shields carried a shutout into the ninth inning and Tampa Bay ended Oakland’s five-game winning streak. Shields (10-8) gave up nine hits and struck out eight. The only runs he allowed were on Dan Johnson’s two-run homer in the ninth. Grant Balfour closed out Shields’ second win since July 17 — a span of seven starts. Lenny DiNardo (8-7) gave up a pair of runs in the second before giving up four runs and six consecutive hits in the third. He was replaced by Ruddy Lugo without retiring a batter, and gave up six runs and eight hits in two-plus innings — his shortest start of the season.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

Padres 14, Phillies 3

PHILADELPHIA — Greg Maddux became the first pitcher to win 10 games in 20 consecutive seasons, tossing seven solid innings for San Diego. Milton Bradley hit a pair of three-run homers and Adrian Gonzalez connected twice for the Padres, who moved three games ahead of the Phillies in the NL wild-card race. Josh Bard had five of the Padres’ season-high 22 hits. San Diego entered three games behind Arizona in the West, while Philadelphia fell six behind the New York Mets in the East. Maddux (10-9) allowed three runs and seven hits, outpitching Jamie Moyer in a matchup of 40-something hurlers with a combined 570 wins. Cy Young had 19 straight seasons with double-digit wins from 1891-1909. Maddux is tied with Nolan Ryan for second behind Don Sutton for most seasons with 10 wins. Sutton had 21. Moyer (11-10) gave up eight runs — six earned — and 10 hits in 42⁄3 innings.

Mets 5, Dodgers 2

NEW YORK — Oliver Perez outpitched Los Angeles Dodgers ace Brad Penny, and New York got a dazzling all-around performance from David Wright. Wright homered, drove in two runs and made a pair of outstanding defensive plays at third base. Perez (12-8) tossed seven shutout innings, allowing three hits and overcoming five walks. He escaped a bases-loaded jam in the first, struck out six and threw 119 pitches to win his second consecutive start. That was enough to beat Penny (14-4), who lasted six innings against a familiar nemesis. The big right-hander fell to 5-11 against the Mets in his career, and 1-9 in 11 starts at Shea Stadium.

Reds 5, Marlins 3

CINCINNATI — Aaron Harang won for the third time in four August starts and Cincinnati tied a season high with its fourth straight victory. Brandon Phillips had three hits, including a home run, and drove in two for Cincinnati. Harang (13-3) allowed eight hits and three runs with one walk and five strikeouts in seven innings to improve to 8-1 in his last 17 starts, dating back to May 25. David Weathers pitched the ninth for his 28th save in 33 opportunities. Dontrelle Willis (8-13), who had nine consecutive losing decisions before beating Arizona 14-5 on Aug. 14, allowed eight hits and five runs with no walks and three strikeouts in 72⁄3 innings.
