YOUNGSTOWN — A city man accused of seriously wounding his brother complained to a judge Thursday that his bond was too high.

“You may not as well have given me a bond, man,” Anthony Peeples told visiting municipal Judge Diane Vettori, who set Peeple’s bond at a total $850,000. He remains in the Mahoning County Jail.

Peeples, 40, of Atkinson Avenue, is accused of breaking into a house at 1531⁄2 S. Truesdale Ave. on Wednesday and shooting his brother, Robert “Poke” Peeples, 44, of East Cleveland, who was staying at the house.

Robert Peeples remains in critical condition in St. Elizabeth Health Center, where he is being treated for multiple gunshot wounds.

The city prosecutor asked Vettori, who is a Mahoning County Area Court judge in Sebring, to set a high bond because of Anthony Peeple’s violent criminal history.

His preliminary hearing was scheduled for Aug. 31

After his brother was shot, Anthony Peeples fled, and a warrant was issued for his arrest on charges of felonious assault and breaking and entering.

The capture

Anthony Peeples was captured by police and U.S. marshals Wednesday night while hiding in Roosevelt Park in Campbell.

According to a police report, they received two anonymous tips about where he might be hiding, and they checked several locations.

The second tip placed him in the Campbell park. Authorities set up a perimeter around the park while others swept through. He was found about 7:15 p.m. in the park pavilion.

He refused to talk with police, the report said.

During his arraignment, Anthony Peeples was provided with a court-appointed lawyer because he’s unemployed. His only item of any value was a 1994 Ford with about 50,000 miles on it, he told the judge, but it was destroyed by his brother.

Investigators said the motive for the shooting was a family dispute.
