Cooper’s eight goals set Yo. Christian girls mark


She paced the Eagles to a 15-4 rout of East Liverpool in the season opener.

AUSTINTOWN — Kara Cooper scored a school-record eight goals as the Youngstown Christian girls soccer team defeated East Liverpool, 15-4, Thursday at Highway Tabernacle Church’s field.

Also in the opener for both schools, sophomore Kristi Cooper had four goals while junior Katie Hartman and sophomores Kelli McNeal and Alyssa Angelo added one apiece for the Eagles (1-0).

Jamee McDougle had two goals for East Liverpool.

Kara Cooper, a senior midfielder⁄forward, reset her previous single-game goal mark of seven.

Kara Cooper is her school’s career leader in goals with 97.

The 15 goals is also a one-game high for Youngstown Christian, which is fielding a program for a fourth season.

Youngstown Christian goalie sophomore Devanie Womack had 23 saves.

Warren JFK 5, Newton Falls 3

NEWTON FALLS — Sophomore Jerrica Cooper scored three goals and had an assist for the Eagles in their season opener at the Tigers’ field.

Freshman Erin McBride added two goals. Kellie Guanieri and Annie Giangardell had an assist apiece.

Julie Davis and Aubrey Coffee paced Newton Falls each with a goal.

The Eagles’ goalkeeper Helena Democopoulus had eight saves. Rebecca Humber had 10 for the Tigers.

Struthers 2, LaBrae 1

LEAVITTSBURG — Nicolette Demyan and Dana Mathews scored a goal apiece for the Wildcats (1-0) at the Vikings’ stadium.

Struthers had 15 shots on goal, compared to seven for the Vikings. Goalie Ashley Galbraith made six saves.

COLUMBIANA — Kyle Knepper and Aaron Shields each scored three goals for the unbeaten Lions (3-0) at Heartland Chistian’s field.

A.J. Steiner, Tyler Burgess and Treg Lunger added a goal apiece. Burgess, Justin Storm and Erin Letarte wach had an assist.

The Lions had 35 shots on goal, compared to 11 for East Liverpool Christian.

Shields, goalie, had two saves for the Lions and Burgess had nine saves. Shaw Taylor had seven saves for East Liverpool Christian.

Steiner of the Lions had 22 stops.
