$4.1M to aid needy with housing here

COLUMBUS — Mahoning and surrounding counties and communities will receive more than $4.1 million to help needy Ohioans purchase, rent or repair housing.

The Ohio Department of Development this week announced that 61 Ohio communities would receive a combined $31.1 million in Community Housing Improvement Program grants.

A total of 1,410 households and 3,807 people statewide are expected to benefit. The funds can be used to repair homes, rehabilitate rental properties, provide down-payment or home-ownership assistance or make other improvements to help low- and moderate-income residents.

Area communities selected for funding are:

UStruthers, $600,800. The funds will leverage an additional $496,200 and will be used to rehabilitate and repair 13 owner-occupied households, provide purchasing and rehabilitation assistance and counseling for three home-buyers, rehabilitate four rental units and, in partnership with Habitat for Humanity, construct two housing units, according to application documents.

UMahoning County, $556,000. The funds will leverage an additional $413,600 and will be used to rehabilitate and repair 12 owner-occupied homes, provide purchasing and rehabilitation assistance and counseling for four home-buyers and rehabilitate six rental units.

UCampbell, $600,800. The funds will leverage an additional $342,900 and will be used to rehabilitate and repair 13 owner-occupied homes, rehabilitate six rental units, provide counseling and assistance to purchase and rehabilitate four households and, with Habitat for Humanity, construct two housing units.

UGirard, $460,000. The funds will leverage an additional $482,700 and will be used to rehabilitate and repair 13 owner-occupied households, provide counseling and assistance to purchase and rehabilitate three households and rehabilitate two rental units.

UColumbiana County, $544,000. The funds will leverage an additional $581,000 and will be used to rehabilitate and repair 11 owner-occupied households, assist in the purchase and rehabilitation of housing for seven families, providing home-buyer counseling for 28 households and, with Habitat for Humanity, construct two housing units.

UEast Palestine, $500,000. The funds will leverage an additional $373,200 and will be used to rehabilitate and repair 12 owner-occupied households, provide home-buyer counseling to 20 households, and provide purchase and rehabilitate assistance for six families.

UNewton Falls, $316,700. The funds will be used to rehabilitate and repair 13 owner-occupied homes.
