Charges for Murray?

STOCKHOLM, Sweden — Bill Murray could face a drunken driving charge after cruising through downtown Stockholm in a golf cart and refusing to take a breath test, citing U.S. law. Police officers spotted the 56-year-old actor-comedian early Sunday in the slow-moving vehicle and noticed he smelled of alcohol when they pulled him over, said Detective-Inspector Christer Holmlund of the Stockholm police. “He refused to blow in the [breath test] instrument, citing American legislation,” Holmlund told The Associated Press on Wednesday. “So we applied the old method — a blood test. It will take 14 days before the results are in.” Murray, who had been at a golf tournament in Sweden, signed a document admitting that he was driving under the influence, Holmlund said.

Diddy’s plan fizzles

EAST HAMPTON, N.Y. — It may be one of the Hamptons’ hotter invites, but Diddy’s Labor Day party won’t light up the night quite as much as he envisioned. East Hampton Town officials have turned down the hip-hop mogul’s plans for a $100,000 fireworks show over East Hampton’s Northwest Harbor on Sept. 2, out of concern that the spectacle could draw boaters to a risky, rocky area.

Middler will be fined

LIHUE, Hawaii — Bette Midler cut down more than 230 trees around one of her properties on the island of Kauai without a permit, and the state has recommended she be fined. The staff of the Board of Land and Natural Resources recommended $6,500 in fines for having the trees felled and for building a graded road without permits required for the land zoned for conservation use. The singer and actress will pay the fines and will follow a replanting program, her attorney Max W. J. Graham said. The actress and movie star, who was born in Honolulu, didn’t realize permits were needed to remove the trees, Graham said.

Another child of Brown

AIKEN, S.C. — A woman has proven through DNA testing that she is a child of the late James Brown, said a longtime adviser to the soul singer. The woman is the third person to determine through DNA testing done after Brown’s death that the singer is their father, Buddy Dallas told The Augusta (Ga.) Chronicle on Monday. About a dozen DNA tests have been performed. Some people have been ruled out as Brown’s children, while other tests are pending, said Dallas, who would not release details about any of the newly found children. Brown’s will, which is being disputed in court, names six children. Brown died Dec. 25 of heart failure at age 73.
