NFL ROUNDUP

News and notes

Chiefs: Holdout running back Larry Johnson agreed to a five-year contract extension and joined practice Tuesday, surprising teammates who broke into scattered cheers when he jogged unannounced onto the field. “Lar-ry! Lar-ry,” many players chanted. They had already been practicing for about 45 minutes when No. 27 suddenly appeared in their midst and began running plays. Johnson, 27, set the NFL record with 416 carries last year while rushing for 1,789 yards, snapping the team record he set the year before. His deal, that is added on to the one year remaining on his previous contract, includes a $19 million guarantee. After practice, Johnson quickly dressed and left without speaking with reporters.

Cowboys: Receiver Terry Glenn won’t play in the preseason, but could be ready for the regular season. Glenn hurt his right knee on the fifth day of training camp and had arthroscopic surgery Aug. 1 to remove loose cartilage from the knee. Coach Wade Phillips said Tuesday that Glenn “probably will practice the day after we play Minnesota.” Dallas plays the Vikings in its last preseason game Aug. 30, which is 10 days before the Sept. 9 season opener against the New York Giants.

Vikings: Despite minimal production over six injury-filled seasons for Green Bay, Robert Ferguson instantly became Minnesota’s highest-profile receiver when he signed a one-year contract with performance incentives that could push his salary past $1 million. Vikings coach Brad Childress has said several times since the spring that he likes the players at this position, but it was a glaring deficiency in 2006. Bobby Wade was the only significant free agent brought in, and second-rounder Sidney Rice was the first of three receivers taken in the draft.

Titans: Linebacker Keith Bulluck kept the cutout photo of Michael Vick on his locker throughout training camp, giving the quarterback the benefit of the doubt that he still might be the Titans’ opponent in 2007. Not anymore. Asked if he was sticking with the picture Tuesday, Bulluck said he felt for Vick. “I got to take him down, though,” Bulluck said. Would Bulluck wait until a private moment, at least when the locker room was closed to media? No. Bulluck turned around with cameras surrounding him, pulled the photo off the front of his locker and said, “This is as private as it gets.”

Seahawks: Seneca Wallace agreed to a four-year extension that will keep him under contract through the 2010 season. He was set to become an unrestricted free agent after the 2007 season, but is now locked up after agreeing to his second extension in 12 months. Last season, Wallace filled in for an injured Matt Hasselbeck and led Seattle to a 2-2 record in his first opportunity to start as a pro — including wins over Oakland and division rival St. Louis. Those wins helped the Seahawks gain control of the NFC West and eventually take their third straight division title.
