Jeanine Mincher, a nutrition instructor at Youngstown State University, provided this information at a food service seminar Tuesday at LaBrae High School.

One study showed that 90 percent of kids given fresh fruits and vegetables and encouraged to eat them did eat them.

About 80 percent of kids offered fresh fruits and vegetables took them when they were offered them.

Only 60 percent of kids took the fresh food options when they were just “made available.”

A verbal encouragement from parents and teachers “went a long way,” Mincher said, to get kids to consume healthful foods.
