Canfield opens season with 5-0 shutout victory against Salem


CANFIELD — John Kanotz scored three goals and an assist as Canfield High shut out Salem 5-0 Tuesday to open its boys soccer season.

Tim Hutchinson, with two assists, and Billy Fisher each scored a goal. Pat Connors and Chad Richards had an assist apiece.

COLUMBIANA — Kyle Knepper scored three goals to spark Heartland Christian.

Treg Lunger scored a goal and had two assists for the Lions (2-0). Durand Foutz and Justin Storm each had a goal and Nate Hall a assist. Aaron Shields had nine saves.

Shawn Knopp and Nich Sheets each scored a goal for the Raiders (0-1). Alex Baker had an assist, while goalie Luke Yeagler had 20 saves.

Warren Harding 3, Newton Falls 1

WARREN — Rachael Lamarco scored two goals while Katie Polenick added one and also one assist to lead Warren Harding in the opener for both schools.

Mariah Brown and Elena Ware also contributed one assist each for the Raiders.

Julie Davis scored Newton Falls’ goal on a penalty kick.

Goalies Stephanie Cross and Avrielle Merten of Harding each had five saves.

Goalie Rebecca Humberger of Newton Falls had 25 saves.
