CHESTER, W. Va. — Three Youngstown-area boxers will be on the undercard in bouts Thursday night at the Mountaineer Race Track ballroom, as part of the International Boxing Council featherweight championship fight.

Chris Koval (23-3, 18 KOs) of Youngstown will face Chad Van Sickle (12 KOs) of Columbus in an six-round bout, while Mike Greenwalt of Boardman will take on Jim Emerick of Butler, Pa., in a four-round heavyweight bout.

Ettiene “ET” Whitaker (36-24) of Warren will meet Chris “Nightmare” Stalworth (8-1) of Pittsburgh in a four-round cruiserweight bout.

In the IBC title bout, which will be supervised by IBC supervisor Harry Meshel of Youngstown, Verquan Kimbrough (17-1-1, 7 KOs) of Aliquippa, Pa., will get a second shot at the world featherweight championship against Rodney “Pit Bull” Jones (27-6, 13 KOs) of Little Rock, Ark.

Jones is coming off two wins and is no stranger to Mountaineer, where he lost a 10-round decision to Paul Spadafora in 2000.

Kimbrough has been training in Las Vegas and has been working with Floyd Mayweather, Sr., Roger Mayweather and Mike McCallum.

Also on the program, Brian “the Beast” Minto (27-2, 16 KOs) of Butler, Pa., will battle Ray Lunsford (19-7, 7 KOs) of Coldwater, Mass., in an eight-round heavyweight bout; while Terrence Miller of Cleveland will make his debut against Nathan Ward (1-0) or Portsmouth in a four-round super welterweight contest.

Minto holds a knockout over Axel Shutz (26-4-1). 

Golfing field set

CANFIELD — The U.S. Mid-Amateur Qualifying Tournament will be held at Tippecanoe Country Club on Aug. 29 with a field of 66 golfers competing for three open berths in the 27th U.S. Mid-Amateur Championships to be held Sept. 29-Oct. 4 at Brandon Dunes Golf Resort in Brandon, Ore.

Eight local golfers will be taking part in the 18-hole event. They are Ken George II of Canfield, Michael Scarsella of Canfield, Scott Porter of Boardman, Gregg Rossi of Poland, Michael Porter of Canfield, Richard Marlowe of Youngstown, Mark Wilson of Canfield and Wesley Caudill of Canfield.

The Mid-Amateur competition is open to golfers ranging in age from 25 to 56.

Scrappers team up
with food bank

NILES — Fans who bring two non-perishable food items to the Scrappers baseball game at Eastwood Field this Saturday will get free admission.

The Scrappers are scheduled to meet the Jamestown Jammers. The gates open at 5 p.m. There will be a post-game fireworks show.

The Second Harvest Food Bank truck will be parked outside the main gate and volunteers will accept donations.

Fans will receive a voucher to redeem at the Scrapper's box office for a free ticket for that game only.

Thiel names Elbin
assistant coach

GREENVILLE, Pa. — Thiel College has hired Kurt Elbin as its new assistant baseball coach.

Elbin, a 2006 graduate of Lock Haven University of Pa., earned his bachelor's of science degree in business administration. He is currently pursuing a master's degree in sport management from California University of Pa.

Prior to his arrival at Thiel, Elbin served as an assistant baseball coach at Muhlenberg College, primarily working with the middle infielders and hitters.

Over the past two summers Elbin has been involved with the TPX Top 96 College Coaches' Clinic, working camps across the country instructing high school players in baseball fundamentals.

"With a strong work ethic, Coach Elbin will fit very well into our program." said ninth-year head coach Joe Schaly.

Hockey tickets

CLEVELAND — Single game tickets for the Lake Erie Monsters ice hockey team will go on sale to the public on Sept. 8 at 10 a.m.

The team’s inaugural season will feature weekly discounted College Nights, post-game skates, appearances by the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders and the infamous Hanson Brothers.
